Heartbeat of the South
HealthLine Sudan was started just recently to raise awareness of the health problems of South Sudan. This concept of helping our brothers and sisters of South Sudan has developed from the joining of several Christian groups. The Church Mission Society of Ireland (CMS-I), Dr. Ian Clark former CMS missionary, Episcopal Diocese of Albany and Diocese of South Sudan have joined forces. The first pilot Primary Health Center will be constructed in the Diocese of Yei in South Sudan. This will be the first of several clinics to be built serving the people of South Sudan. Dr. Clark has established the International Hospital of Kampala as well as several health care clinics in northern Uganda and will continue to do the same in South Sudan in partnership with CMS. As well as providing a superior health care and a professional training package one of the paramount aims of the program is to provide professional HIV/AIDS testing and treatment as well as providing practical support for the Episcopal Church of Sudan (ECS). HealthLine Sudan (HLS) will also be specifically sensitive to the human rights of women and children and to provide care to everyone in the community irrespective of gender, age, ethnicity and religious belief. The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that approximately 1.1 billion people have no access to safe water and no basic sanitation. Contaminated water is often the cause of ordinary childhood diarrhea, a leading killer of African children. These children are 10 times more likely to die before their 5th birthday. The Sudan is the largest and one of the most geographically diverse countries in Africa. It is nearly the size of Europe. It has an estimated population of 35 million and has recently emerged from a 21 year civil war with the northern government. The brutal war is estimated to have cost the lives of 1.5 million people, with 2 million refugees in the 9 bordering countries who are now returning back to their homeland, many of them with a multitude of diseases. We can help be the heartbeat of South Sudan and restore the spiritual, mental and physical health of our brothers and sisters through the HealthLine initiative. Please consider taking this concept back to your parishes and continue to pray for these people. God Bless. |
